Weekly Update March 28-April 1

4th grade will begin testing for MAP beginning April 6th and ending April 14th.  We are planning to administer the tests on Wednesdays and Thursdays.  The areas we will be testing in are Communication Arts and Math.  Communication arts will be tested on April 6 & 7. Math will be tested April 13th and 14th.  It is beneficial to the students to come to school on time, wear comfortable clothes, eat a well balanced breakfast, and get a good night’s rest.

We will take a break each day of testing to stretch and enjoy a snack.  To ensure that each child will have a snack, we will make a trail mix.  If it is possible, could you please send a food item to school some time during the week of March 21-25, which we could use to add to our trail mix?  Any snack items that do not have peanuts (nuts) work well (cereal, pretzels, marshmallows, goldfish, M&M’s, & raisins are just a few suggestions). The school is providing 2 bags of peppermints and water bottles. Many students have asked about chewing gum. After much consideration I will not allow gum chewing, but students may have peppermints.

During the MAP testing window our daily schedule changes. We will have lunch at the same time 12:10-12:40, but our block time will change. We will have block 12:50-1:40. Afternoon recess will also change to be 1:40-2:00.  The schedule must change to accommodate testing times in the morning. EVEN DAYS WE DO NOT TEST WE WILL FOLLOW THIS NEW SCHEDULE! It is effective March 28 - April 15.

This week we will continue spring training reviewing the concepts we have learned this year in order to prepare for the MAP. Do not look for word study words during MAP testing. Also, expect homework to be a bit more sporadic. Students are working very hard during the day and I want them to rest and get to bed early.

Reports card were sent home Friday!

Weekly Update March 21-25

Welcome Back and Welcome Spring!

Mat- Motion Geometry is this week. We will be studying symmetry, translations, reflections, rotations, tessellations, and much more! This is a fun chapter, but very vocabulary heavy! We will incorporate these words into our word study this week to help us better comprehend the vocabulary. Also, the Geometry pictionary packet is due tomorrow!

Reading-This week will will review some test taking strategies such as looking back in the text and underlining important information. There will be no reading response this week.

Writing-More poetry fun this week! We will be looking at some more structured poetry such as Cinquian We will also have more time to explore more free verse. Writing homework tonight will be to bring in an ordinary object to write a poem about. Ideas might be an apple, banana, favorite blanket, stuffed animal, etc...Please no toys.

Weekly Update March 7-11

Good Morning,

Have your students told you that Spring Training has started?!?!?!? We are training for the MAP and we have an awesome starting line-up. Opening Day is just weeks away! We are gearing up for a home run!

Math-This week we will continue talking about 2-dimensional geometry. Today we will classify quadrilaterals. I will be sending the study guide home tomorrow. The math test will be Friday. If you know your child will be out on Friday, the must take the test earlier. We don't want to wait until after Spring Break!
Also, remember the vocabulary reports are dues Wednesday and Thursday!

Reading-We have been working with some nonfiction texts to review text features. We are also working on supporting our answers with proof from the text.

Writing-"You may be a poet, and not even know it!" Last week we discussed some poetry terminology. We also practiced writing poems with a couplet rhyme scheme and the Japanese form of poetry, haiku. This week we will work on some imagery and personification.

Word Study-There are no word study words this week. We will use this time for some extra spring training practice!
