Weekly Reading Response

Each student is required to either post one short paragraph on this blog during the week about the book they are reading at home OR should turn in a paragraph on paper on Friday.  Responses should be 4-5 sentences in length.  This week we are focusing on inferences. I also recommend that you discuss this in your reflection.

Here is an example of what your reading response homework might look like:

This week I have been reading The Big One-Oh by Dean Pitchford. It is about a boy named Charley Maplewood who is planning a tenth birthday party. Charley does not have any friends. As I’m reading this book, I’m reminded of the times when I was planning birthday parties and was worried about who might come and if they would have a good time. Today while I was reading I made an inference. The author wrote, "it felt like the weight of the world had just dropped onto my shoulders." I inferred that Charley was feeling very stressed and overwhelmed. I’m looking forward to finishing this book to see what happens to Charley and if he does get to have a good birthday party after all.

As you write your own reading response this week, please remember these things:

•It should be about the book you are reading at home.

•You should tell the title and the author.

•You should tell a little bit about what the book is about.

•Include one inference you made while reading.

•It needs to be one paragraph of 5-7 sentences.

•It can be turned in on paper OR by commenting on this blog post

  1. This week I have been reading the book The Big One-Oh by Dean Pitchford. Charlie Maplewood is trying to plan his birthday party when things go terribly wrong. His moms boyfriend Vince is already trying to plan a cowboy theme birthday party. Charlie wants a house of horrors theme party. His next door neighbor Gary is going to help him make all kinds of fake body parts like ears, noses, and fingers. When I was reading this book I infered that Charlie was feeling frazzled because the author said, "it felt like the weight of the world just dropped on my shoulders". - Elizabeth Norris

  4. Dear Mrs. Phillips,
I'm reading the book Toy Story 3 by Jasmine Jones . Andy is going to college, but the toys still want to play. All the toys get donated to Sunny Side Day Care. Woody escapes, but Bonnie brings him home. All the toys get trapped by Lotso. Woody finds a way to escape, and all the toys go to live at Bonnie's house. I infered that Woody was scared because the author said "Woody saw the garbage truck coming for his friends".~J.C. Stewart

Nikki is trying to be popular, cute and cool all at the same time also trying to keep her friends from moving to the basement of the public library in New York. As I'm reading this book I wonder will she ever be popular? I also wonder will she ever stop her friends before they move on Friday? While reading I made an inference that when they started screaming and jumping up and down hugging me. I inferred they were very VERY exited. 6. The book that I am reading is The Thirty Nine Clues, book two, One False Note, by Gordon Korman. The book is about 2 kids named Amy and Dan traveling around the world to find the thirty nine clues. The person (or team) that finds all thirty nine clues first will become the most powerful human in the history of the world. It isn't that easy when you have the Social Services chasing you and you also have other competitors trying to kill you. I was reading and I made an inference. The author wrote:" Can't remember my own parents, but she's a glowing electric billboard in my head". I infer that Dan feels his Aunt Beatrice is annoying and he can't forget how mean she was. I'm looking forward to seeing if Dan and Amy find the secound clue before the end of the book. - Lucas

  8. I am reading the book Fudge-a-mania by Judy Blume. It is about two brothers, Peter and Fudge, who go on a three week vacation to Maine. Peter thinks it will be fun, but when he gets some bad news, his very fun vacation turns into a disaster. This week our reading skill is making inferences. While reading this book, I made an inference. The author wrote"I fell over when you told me who you were marrying." I inferred that Peter was shocked at who Fudge was marrying because she was his worst enemy. I am anxious to see if Peter has a good summer after all!-Kayla

  9. This week I have been reading Percy Jackson and & the Olympians: The battle of the labyrinth by Rick Riordan. It is about a boy named Percy Jackson who is a demi-god. He is on a quest with his friend Annabeth in the Labyrinth of the underworld. As I am reading this book, it reminded me of the 740 mile maze in Hawaii that I read about. Today while I was reading I made an inference. The author wrote: “I`ve failed“, he muttered. “There`s no way to get her back.” I inferred that that the character Nico felt sad and desperate. I am looking forward to finishing this book to see what happens to Percy & Annabeth, and to see what happens in the labyrinth. – Sam Deeter

  10. This week I finished reading The Real Lucky Charm by Charisse K. Richardson. It is about a girl named Mia who starts playing on her brother's basketball team. She has a charm bracelet that she believes is lucky. She plays well in the beginning when she has her bracelet on. She loses her bracelet and plays badly in a game and thinks that she can't play well without the bracelet. I made an inference that Mia felt like a failure when the author said, "Mia climbed the stairs and moped all the way to her room." By the end of the book, Mia realizes that she can play well even without her lucky charm. Her brother tells her that she is her own best lucky charm. I really liked this book. - Jason Grenia

  11. Dear Mrs. Phillips,
This week I have been reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, by J.K. Rowling. It is about the chamber of secrets and how Harry and Ron try to find out more about it. While reading this book, I wonder what the monster is and how big it is. I'm reminded of when my neighbor went in a sewer amd saw a shadow but didn't know what it was. While reading, I made an inference. The author wrote,"Harry Potter you must leave Hogwarts this year." I infer Harry will stay at Hogwarts anyway and bad stuff will happen. I look forward to finishing this book and finding out what the monster is. - Andrew Chabloz

What is happening in the story right now is that Anakin Skywalker has taken some medicine to help him with painful surgeory to replace his arm with a proshetic one. they need to replace his arm because he got it cut off. He got it cut off by getting into a lightsaber duel with Count Dooku on geonosis and lost and the price to pay was for his arm to be cut off.Now Yoda is worried that he won't be abale to use the force anymore and can't be a jedi anymore.I made an inference when she said "She coundn't help shivering, His voice was so cold" and my inference was that she is nervous and scared. I just can't stop thinking what could happens next! --- Jacob Frederick
